Rosedale-Kilmany cricket club captain, Geoff Wells recently announced his retirement from Gippsland Cricket League and Country Week cricket with the S.M.C.A. 1st XI team.

Wells has been a regular inclusion in the Sale-Maffra senior team for most of the last 6 years during which time he played in 18 Provincial Division Country Week matches and 17 Senior G.C.L. matches for the S.M.C.A.

Prior to establishing a place in the Sale-Maffra team, Wells also played Country Week matches in the late 1990’s with the Caledonia representative team in the 6th, 5th and 4th divisions of Country Week as that team worked its way up the grades.

For Sale-Maffra, Wells’ 35 matches yielded 670 runs at an average of 19.7.  He scored two half centuries, 59 not out against Bairnsdale in the G.C.L. and 54 not out against Geelong at Country Week both in the 2002/03 season.  Along the way he played in Provincial Country Week premierships in 2003 and 2006 and G.C.L. premierships in 2003, 2005 and 2006.

Renowned as a middle order pinch hitter who could be relied upon to add an all important 20 or 30 in the last few overs of an innings, Wells smashed a total of 67 fours and 19 sixes which accounted for 57% of his runs scored.

He is also credited with three fielding dismissals, being two catches and a run out.

Wells has indicated he would like to finish his representative career with the Caledonia Association and is likely to travel to Warrnambool this coming February to complete with that team in division 4 of Country Week.  The SMCA committee has given permission for this to occur as required under V.C.C.L. rules that govern senior and subordinate Association obligations.
