It is with profound sadness that we today learn of the passing of a champion player and cricket administrator in Len Hall – SMCA rep cap No 95.
Len Hall came to Heyfield as a young bank employee and a cricketing all-rounder in the very early 1960’s and played a significant role in that club's unprecedented run of success between 1963/64 and 1972/73 when they won seven first grade premierships, including four straight from 1964 to 1967. He was made a life member of the Heyfield cricket club in 1974 half way through an eight year stint as club President.
From incomplete records, we find that he scored three 1st grade centuries with a top score of 124.
He also took 6 wickets or more in an innings on at least three occasions with best figures of 8 for 19.
At representative level (once again from incomplete records) we find he represented the Association on 73 occasions, scoring 1,331 runs at 26.1 and taking 70 wickets at 18.06. Representative highlights include an unbeaten top score of 103, best bowling of 6 for 16 and a GCL hattrick against Bairnsdale in 1964. Len was a member of the SMCA team that won a Country Week premiership in 1963, taking 3 for 62 in the final.
He was made a life member of the SMCA about ten years ago. He was named as a “Champion of Gippsland Cricket” in 2006 having been named in the All-Gippsland team on five occasions during his representative career.
On an administrative level he was Heyfield’s representative on the delegates committee for several years and when the structure changed to an elected committee he served two years as Vice-President and four years as President. He also served as honorary auditor for a time.
At Gippsland level, he was Gippsland Cricket League President for four seasons from 1978/79 to 1981/82.
